ATM Safety & Security:
Many of us can’t imagine our lives without
the convenience of our ATM cards. Because of the popularity of these we
have an increased need for security and personal caution. ATM’s are located
almost everywhere and are available 24 hours, 7 days a week.
Identity Theft is a serious concern in today’s world.
A criminal steals your account information and then runs up charges and
other bills in your name. Many times these criminals start their theft with
stolen ATM information.
To protect yourself and your identity as well as ensure
your personal safety always use caution when using an ATM.
WHAT CAN YOU DO
- Report lost or stolen cards immediately. Consider
your ATM card cash, and protect it as such.
- Someone who knows you most often commits ATM fraud.
1. Don’t give the number to anyone.
2. Don’t write the PIN on the card or keep it in your wallet. 3.
Don’t use numbers that are easily identified (anniversary, birthday, etc)
4. Don’t leave your receipt at the machine. Discarded receipts are
a primary source for identity thieves. Always shred any paper with
your information or account numbers.
- Personal Safety
1. Minimize your time at the machine
2.
Have
your ATM card and PIN number ready before approaching the machine.
3.
Count
your money later, not at the ATM.
4.
When
using the machine, use your body to shield your transaction.
5.
If you
leave your car, be sure to lock it up.
6.
At
night, use only ATM’s that are well lit and clearly visible from the
street.
WHAT YOUR CREDIT UNION IS DOING
- Installing ATMs in clearly visible and well lit
areas
- Maintaining landscapes to discourage thieves from
hiding near machines
- Installing cameras, mirrors and panic buttons
- Working with manufacturers to improve the security
technology, as a first line deterrent to crime
An ATM should be convenient and safe for your use. See
your credit union if you want to learn more about ATM safety.
