 VA History:
The Veterans Administration Employees Credit
Union was chartered June 6, 1935. With $13.50 in cash the credit union
opened for business on June 20, 1935, serving employees of the V.A. With
only about 10 share accounts and very difficult economic times the small
credit union survived. By December 31, 1935 the Credit Union had
increased its cash on hand to $21.61 and had outstanding loans totaling
$296.50. The share balances in the member accounts had increased to
$322.00. The Credit Union had expenses that first year of $26.21. In
1936 the bank examiners advised VAECU that it was very unwise to do
unsecured loans over $50.00.
Sixty-eight years later, December 31, 2003, the
Veterans Administration Credit Union has assets of over seven million,
outstanding loans of over four million and almost 1400 members. We now
are able to serve V.A. employees, service organization employees, and in
2001 we were very proud to open our charter to serve veterans and their
families.
VACU has seen many changes over the years, and has
been able to increase products and services for our membership.
We are still proud to be considered a small credit
union, as it allows us to know our members on a first name basis.
Through it all, the Veterans Administration Credit Union still believes
in the Credit Union philosophy of “People Helping People”.
